john alleyne
John Alleyne is a Barbados native currently based in New Orleans, Louisiana. His paintings and prints are rooted in an exploration of freedom, connecting his lived experience with an intuitive process of silkscreen mark-making. Alleyne utilizes unhinged silkscreens and squeegees as mark-making tools to create painterly gestures of abstraction. Within these gestures, Alleyne challenges notions of healing, beauty, manhood, andmasculinity within the aesthetic of hairstyle-guide posters. For Alleyne, abstraction is a way to visually celebrate and learn from the past to create the future.
He is an Assistant Professor of Art and Program Leader of the Visual Arts program at Southern University and A & M College in Baton Rouge, LA.
John Alleyne’s work is featured in “Artist Spotlight” in IMPACT Magazine Vol. 1 No. 1, with his work “Umi Says Shine Your Light on the World” featured on the cover of Vol. 1 No. 1. His solo exhibition, “… in a perfect world, I would be perfect, world.” was on display in the Main Gallery at Sulfur Studios in April, 2022.
