Q: I’m an artist that wants to go to Ossabaw, can I apply?

A: At this time, the Ossabaw Island Residency is invitational only.

Q: How long is the Ossabaw Island Residency?

A: In 2026 and 2027, the OIR will offer 1 week residency sessions.

Q: What are the expectations of Artist Residents?

A: There are no thematic requirements or expected deliverables. The residency is intended for artists’ ideas to emerge and take shape, free from urban distractions. Artists are expected to be open to meeting new people, engaging in discussions, sharing group meals, and exploring the island.

Q: Can you explain the application process?

A: Artists are nominated by members of the OIR Steering & Advisory Committees. Nominated artists then apply with an optional letter of intent. OIR Selection Committee reviews the applications and conducts interviews with artists to determine the final selections. Select artists are then invited to attend.

Q: What are the accommodations on the island like?

A: Artists will stay on Ossabaw Island in either the Boarding House or the Club House. All visiting artists will have private sleeping accommodations and access to shared common spaces. Meals are fully provided during the residency. Each day includes one shared communal dinner, along with breakfast items and bag lunches prepared for daytime use. Kitchens are available in both buildings for light personal use.

Q: How remote and wild is Ossabaw?

A: There are alligators, snakes, bugs (mosquitoes, ticks, gnats, spiders, etc.), wild boar, and donkeys, to name a few.

Though our trips are planned for ideal weather (not too hot or too cold), the heat and humidity can be intense during midday. The trips will be rain or shine, except in the case of extreme weather.

Q: How will artists get around on the island?

A: Transport on the island includes riding in the back of a pick up truck, as well as walking. The land is flat, with dirt roads and paths. This is a trip for people who don't mind getting dirty, sweaty, and dealing with sometimes uncomfortable moments in nature. Walking several miles a day is common, as is lounging on porches, laying out at the gorgeous pristine beach, and walking down dirt roads through dense forests.
