ANNOUNCING OUR 2026 Session two Incubator Artist:
Nathaniel Thompson
Nathaniel Thompson (b. 1997) was born in Thailand and immigrated to the United States, spending his formative years across various regions of Georgia, particularly on St. Simons Island. He currently resides in Savannah, Georgia.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Thompson specializes in vintage and analog photography, alongside painting and sculpture. Utilizing analog film (35mm, 120, and large format), early digital cameras, video tape media, and instant film, he integrates found objects, reclaimed materials, and discarded imagery into his works.
Inspired by his surroundings and experiences, Thompson's art explores themes of the mundane, tradition, dilapidation, and transformation. His work captures moments where decay reveals layers of tradition, culture, and humanity.
Constantly documenting his environment, Thompson aims to construct a historical narrative of liminal and passive spaces, reflecting on the past and present.
His photographs offer a nuanced reflection on the intersection between tradition and decay, embodying a compassionate understanding of contemporary Southern America. Despite frustrations with rigid architecture and decay, Thompson's work preserves Southern culture, making it relatable and human.
Thompson also honors Southern tradition by crafting folk art from found and reclaimed materials, continuing a rich legacy of Southern folk artists. Drawing inspiration from his surroundings, he repurposes materials to imbue his work with history and locality.
Acknowledging the barriers in traditional fine art engagement, Thompson incorporates street art and installation works. By offering art outside institutional confines and inviting physical interaction, he fosters deeper engagement and understanding, democratizing access to art.
