Joanna Angell is a multidisciplinary studio artist living and working in Savannah, Georgia. Her work draws upon patterns in the natural world and inherited memory. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the University of South Carolina Beaufort where she directs the USCB Sea Islands Center Gallery.

Joanna holds a B.A. in English from Drew University in Madison, NJ and an M.F.A in Printmaking from the University of Georgia where she studied with Tamarind printmaker Charles Morgan and ceramicist Ron Meyers. She studies frequently in workshops at the Penland School of Craft. Joanna's ceramics, paintings, and prints are exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions and belong to collections including The President’s Collection of the University of Georgia, the South Carolina Palmetto Hands Collection, and the John F. Kennedy Fine Arts Department Collection at Savannah State University.

About the project: Dressed up

“The form of the dress for me speaks about the invisibility and reducible reality I have felt both in my youth and in my aging, and about comfort in a feminine body and within a female identity, referencing qualities that are internal and personal but also qualities that societies apply and expect. During the ON::View residency in October I plan to explore the form and its narrative and didactic potential through printmaking and mark-making on paper and wood. I look forward to responding to the nature of the residency space, too, incorporating installation and performance.” — Joanna Angell
