Sulfur Studios is pleased to present Memory, Ephemerality, and Intuitive Making, an MFA Thesis Exhibition by L. Edward Smith.

The work of L. Edward Smith spans over three decades. It has been exhibited nationally, from the Textile Museum in Minneapolis, MN to Carnival in Venice, Italy, and in other various venues throughout central Pennsylvania. This exhibition, Memory, Ephemerality, and Intuitive Making, is a body of work created during the acquisition of an MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA. Over the years, Smith’s work has been based on memories of childhood and growing up in rural Pennsylvania. As a farm boy who had a close relationship with his mom, Smith learned many skills early in life such as canning, gardening, sewing and crocheting. “I remember my mom, aunts and grandmother sewing, stitching and crocheting together.” These charrettes are the beginning of his interest in making. The work is a body of portraits of influential women in Smith’s life done in crochet, collaborative installations with his aunt and mother, and automatic writing and drawings resulting from the process of making. The work is all based on memories and ephemeral situations, created in an intuitive process with repurposed materials.

Memory, Ephemerality, and Intuitive Making will be on display in the Gallery at Sulfur Studios from May 6th - 9th, 2021, with a gallery reception on May 7th from 6 - 9 pm. There will be a gallery talk that evening at 7 pm - masks required, with a maximum of 20 people in the gallery at a time.
