Sulfur Art Services is pleased to present Neosublime, a solo exhibition by Kathy Varadi, on display at The Sentient Bean from March 3rd - April 27th, 2021.
Kathy Varadi is a contemporary artist developing the concept of a new sublime. She applies the classical philosophical notions of the sublime to overwhelming and incomprehensible current events and creates aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking paintings that provide validation, support and comfort to the viewer. Varadi is currently an MFA student at Georgia Southern University, and received her BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Neosublime seeks to answer the question, “Does the sublime exist in the contemporary world and can it be rendered in contemporary art?” The search for the answer begins with the philosophical concepts of the sublime as described by Immanuel Kant and Edmund Burke. It is informed by art from the Romantic Period to the present. The pieces presented in this exhibition concentrate on the theme of the invisible, insidious and ubiquitous qualities of climate change. Sea level rise, globalization, air pollution and weather pattern changes are subtly depicted in deceptively calm landscape scenes. Small human figures or products of industrialization are signifiers that there is rarely a landscape that doesn’t have evidence of human behavior.
Neosublime will be on display from March 3rd - April 27th, 2021 and may be seen during The Sentient Bean’s open hours. There will be an Opening Reception on Friday, April 2nd from 5:00 - 7:00 pm with social distancing and masks required. A virtual Artist Talk will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition; more details to follow.
