Transcription of a conversation at Suzanne Jackson’s house.
(doorbell rings)
Suzanne Jackson: (answering) Hello, how are you doing?
SJ: (returning) Here’s Emily, somebody you haven’t seen in a while. And, this is Jon Witzky.
Emily Earl: Hi, Mr. Carter! Lovely to see you!
Jon Witzky: Hello, hey! Nice to meet you!
Ike Carter: Ok, good to see you!
EE: How’ve you been?
IC: I’ve been gettin older - and fatter.
(laughter)
IC: Well this is – what are you doing?
SJ: They’re doing an interview for Sulfur Studios.
IC: Oh!
SJ: So you’re doing an arts magazine – what else are you gonna cover?
EE: We just did an interview a couple of days ago with Jimmie Williams, who was a sign painter around town from the 60’s until the late 90’s.
JW: I was really hoping to see you – I was gonna ask if you guys would be willing to give a “Top 10 Songs” list to share in the magazine.
SJ: You just asked him the wrong question!
IC: Yeah, well...
SJ: A “Top 10” – you can’t call it a “Top 10.”
JW: Oh ok, we won’t call it a “Top 10.”
IC: Some of my favorites - Because a “Top 10” – there is no such thing.
JW: I like that, yeah.
IC: They did a newspaper article about me one time, and the reporter asked, “what is your favorite album” – and that’s ridiculous, I mean, 1955 is when I started listening.
SJ: If you listened to him, how many times did he say: “THIS is the best artist,” or “THIS is the greatest,” or “THIS is my favorite one” -
(laughter)
IC: That’s what I always said, “THIS is my favorite!”
SJ: And you can’t help it.
JW: Maybe you guys could come together and pick some meaningful songs –
SJ: Or you just let him do it!
JW: I can do that.
SJ: Because whatever he says – he’s the special one, he’s the one that knows it all –
JW: Well, I would love it if you would be willing to do that. I think that’d be a very cool little feature.
IC: Yeah. I’ll try to think of some – I could probably give you ten favorite albums, but then that ten could very well be ten thousand!
(laughter)
JW: I love the idea: “These are my favorite albums right this minute.”
SJ: Yeah, that’s the way.
IC: I got so many – in retrospect, I thought about it and I could have given the reporter some bs, and, you know, give a couple things, but I just don’t feel like that about the music. It has to be serious. Because I’m serious about that. But I can do that. Send me an email and let me know, I’ll try to pick out some.
JW: Well, I would love that. I’m glad that you walked in the door!
SJ: He has a good habit of doing that.
IC: Well, I’ve always heard there’s no such thing as coincidence.
SJ: So, good times. That’s good, I’m glad.
IC: Well ok, I appreciate it! I’m glad I stopped in! I’ll talk to you later… See y’all.
(walking into another room)
IC: (coming back in) I just wanna show y’all Bebop. (showing picture) That’s my dog, Bebop
EE: Aw, so cute. Good name too!
IC: All right Suzanne, I’ll see you later.
