“My long-term creative slump began in 2019, during the aftermath of my first solo shows of the largest series (20 pieces) I had ever done. The series was shown at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in a month with 2 hurricanes. It was shown in Savannah at 100 Miles, with an artist talk to a packed house. There was lots of good feedback, but I took almost all my paintings home with me. It felt like, ‘what’s the point?’
“Over the years pieces have sold, some have traveled to shows, but many are still on my walls. Christmas 2019 my widowed mother had a serious breakdown and we moved her to assisted living in Savannah. COVID struck and we spent those years on an emotional roller coaster of having a mother in memory care and caring for two amazing, very young granddaughters. I barely hung on to painting by teaching some classes and pet portrait commissions.
A couple of years ago, we moved into a different house where I have a huge studio. Once we were settled in, I began the struggle to get motivated to create. In 2024 I took a workshop with artist Patrick Lee in hopes of being inspired and loosening up. I started on a painting I have been thinking about for years. ‘Sorry Charlie’s’ is a bit different from my earlier architectural works and I had to put it away a few times to keep from lapsing into old ways. The process helped me to remember how much I love being in my studio painting. It made me really miss mixed media, bringing to mind all sorts of images I plan constantly in my head, motivating me to get to work. At the start of 2025, I really do feel like I have begun again – finally!”
