“While wandering through the swamplands of Ossabaw Island I was struck by the prehistoric landscape. I observed alligators lurking just beneath the pitch black water, the opportunistic palmettos anchoring themselves from within the splits of oak tree limbs, tenacious climbing smilax optimistically reaching upwards with nothing to latch onto. I felt the eyes of a thousand hidden creatures watching my every move. Instinctually I began to feel I might be swallowed whole in a moment if I didn’t keep moving with intention. Though fearful, I was so deeply fascinated and wanted only to trudge deeper into the wildness. I took this experience into my studio and began to imagine what it might be like if I were left to fend for myself in a land where everything wants to consume me.”
