Mother and daughter artists, Kathy and Maggie Hayes, have come together to create the collaborative exhibition The Play of Light. Maggie’s figurative paintings explore the body in nature’s light, and Kathy’s ceramics and installations explore the colors and reflections of light through water and earth. Maggie Hayes is a well-known fixture in the Savannah arts scene - a painter, sculptor, DJ, yoga instructor and performance artist, Maggie's work has been exhibited throughout Savannah and most recently in a solo exhibition at Day & Night Projects in Atlanta. Kathy's path towards art wasn't as clear-cut - she spent time as a therapist, a stay at home mom, and an art teacher. Although art was present in Kathy's life since early childhood, it wasn’t until she got her own kiln at age 57 that she was able to truly pursue her love for making art with clay. For this exhibition, mother and daughter combine their forces, exploring colors, textures and rhythms, capturing the elusive Play of Light as it relates to both the outer world and the inner spiritual essence of light.
The Play of Light is on display from July 1st – 25th and may be seen during Sulfur Studios’ gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday from 12 – 5PM or by appointment. About the Artists:
Maggie Hayes (b. Atlanta, GA, 1989) is a working painter, sculptor and performance artist based in Savannah, GA. With over ten years working as a yoga instructor, and another previous decade as a competitive swimmer, much of Maggie’s art stems from her connection to the body and to the senses as a vehicle to access the universal creative expanse. Through a unique level of discipline derived from her devotion to athletic and spiritual practices, Maggie’s approach to art is both serious and playful, courting intense themes with curiosity and eagerness to understand and express. In the past year, Maggie founded “Together in Paradise” (@paradisevitalitystudio) as a way to share her mission and passions through a single platform, which incorporates her artwork, as well as movement and breath practices, workshops, and further explorations of the psycho-spiritual-somatic. Kathy Hayes is presenting work in The Play of Light that brings together her love of clay, nature and the emotional-spiritual connection. She is a wife, mother, and retired art teacher. She grew up in a large Catholic family in Louisiana, to which she attributes her devotion to family, her pursuit of creative exploration and her appreciation for the complexity of the human condition. She studied art and psychology in college. She worked as a therapist and later as a stay at home mom. She loved the experience of sharing art with her own children and their friends. This set the stage for returning to college at 45 to get certified to teach art. She shared her love and excitement for the creative arts with many students. Although art was present in her life since early childhood, it wasn’t until she got her own kiln at age 57 that she was able to truly pursue her love for making art with clay. Retiring opened the time and space to make the work in this show. Creating an art experience that takes you into her fascination with the Play of Light is a dream she carried since she first made work with translucent porcelain. Her daughter Maggie agreed to help create an art show bringing together Maggie’s paintings and her clay work. She hopes The Play of Light will share the magic of creating art and experiencing nature.
