Have you ever skipped a stone on a lake and noticed the ripples it makes with each bounce? The stories passed down from generation to generation work in much the same way, sending out ripples into the world. Your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents have their own stories to tell, and they are part of your history too! By learning about them and passing them on, you learn more about yourself - and by living your life, you make a splash of your own.
For this project, talk to your parents, grandparents, or elder adults you know and ask to hear stories about their lives. Then, create an image of a person you talked to, or one of the stories you heard, on the smooth stone provided in the Art Kit! You could create a painting of the story itself, a portrait of the person, or even a collage using photos of the person.
Kits can be picked up from Sulfur Studios & the Bull Street Library from June 1st - 30th. Finished stones can be returned to the library by June 30th for display in the Story Stones Showcase!
This youth art project is in conjunction with the exhibition, A Return To… Commemorating Juneteenth, Curated by Alexis Javier, on display in Sulfur Studios’ Main Gallery from June 3rd - 20th, 2021.
