Sulfur Art Services is pleased to present Setting Boundaries, a solo exhibition by Peggy Jo Aughtry on display at The Sentient Bean from April 27th - June 8th, 2021.
“I was never taught how to set boundaries. In fact, I never knew setting boundaries was an option. Too often we aren't taught - and subsequently we don't teach - that setting boundaries is a very healthy way to protect ourselves and loved ones. Having a boundary could be all the protection we need to prevent unwanted touching, hurtful encounters, or negative situations. I have a story. It carries with it a huge impact. But I decided to portray the effects of my experiences on canvas, and to let the image be the impact. What I may see as a tragedy, you may see as a triumph. Let the impact be personal.” -- Peggy Jo Aughtry
Emerging American artist Peggy Jo Aughtry discovered a natural talent for art after life-threatening complications from a routine surgery in 2011 left her with debilitating physical and emotional wounds as well as crippling depression, anxiety and agoraphobia that kept her a prisoner in a small room in her Savannah home for weeks at a time. Through this deeply transformative period in her life emerged the art styles of Picasso, Van Gogh and Seurat by way of simple crayons and markers on paper. Self-taught in Pointillism and Cubism, Aughtry now works in oil pastel and acrylic. She recently completed her first public showing and continues to create new works daily, transforming the room that once held her hostage into an in-home artist studio. Her work can currently be seen hanging in local Savannah businesses.
Setting Boundaries is on display from April 27th – June 8th, 2021 and may be seen during The Sentient Bean’s open hours. A reception will be held on Friday, May 7th from 5 – 7PM - masks required. This exhibition is curated and installed by Sulfur Art Services, a project of Sulfur Studios, which presents local art in local businesses.
