Sulfur Studios is pleased to present our National Spring Juried Exhibition ReNew, sponsored by Starlandia Art Supply. ReNew is an exciting and surprising exhibition on display in the Main Gallery of Sulfur Studios from April 1st - 18th, 2021, with an Opening Reception on Friday, April 2nd from 6:00 - 9:00 pm (pre-registration and masks required: click here to register for a time slot: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/opening-reception-renew). In conjunction with the exhibition, we are also hosting an evolving site-specific installation in Sulfur Studios On::View Pop-up Gallery, featuring work by Savannah’s Matt Toole of Toole Sculpture Works. For this exhibition, Starlandia and Sulfur Studios will be partnering with Live Oak Public Libraries to present ReInvent!, a Youth Art Project.
Spring is a time of renewal: old growth dies so that new life can arise. We have asked artists across the country to consider “How can we take the debris of what was and create new forms, new thoughts, new experiences?” The artists in ReNew have answered this call in surprising and creative ways – finding inspiration in unlikely places. These works challenge the notion of what materials can do and give new life and meaning to the forgotten and discarded elements of our lives.
Participating Artists:
Emily Bowser, Monica Cioppettini, Arden Cone, Harry DeLorme, Josh Gary, Rachel Green, Julia Harmon, Christopher Kerr-Ayer, Caryn Martin, Jordan Fitch Mooney, Bob Mosier, Bonnie Mullins, Norton Pease, Laura Pleasants, Moises Ramos, Stella Ranae Von Schmid, Wanda Scott, Bryce Speed
Arden Cone responded to the call with the creation of her work titled “Blue Collar Dream.” Cone states, “For this work, I used materials from off the family farm to envision and embody the hope inherent within the American dream. Found hay baling string, used denim and rusty wire are the humble materials of everyday life on a farm.”
For ReNew, Christopher Kerr-Ayer created deceptively simple glass replicas of Crayola crayons. Kerr-Ayer explains “Informed by texture and color, this piece experiments with tricking the viewer, while championing the form of a universal tool and toy. These crayons are made of colored glass scrap, and found crayon wrappers and accessories. This small collection of crayons represents how the smallest parts of our memory are galvanized by our experience.”
Savannah resident Harry DeLorme creates both functional objects as well as new and exciting compositions from unusual sources. DeLorme breathes new life into discarded plastic found on the banks of the Savannah River, transforming it into art objects, from paintings to functional clocks.
About the ReInvent! Youth Art Project:
An environmentally-conscious future calls for creative solutions. ReInvent!, a project in cooperation with Sulfur Studios, Live Oak Public Libraries and Starlandia Art Supply, encourages youths to use existing materials to depict their own futures through re-purposed mixed media, drawing, painting, collage, or anything else they can dream up. Mystery material kits, filled with supplies from Starlandia and the Bull Street Library, can be picked up from April 1st — 18th, 2021, and/or feel free to use materials from home! Participants will have the opportunity to display their visions of the future in the ReInvent Showcase at the Bull Street Library through the month of April in celebration of Earth Day — drop off works by April 18th.
