Main Gallery: Revival: A Call for Radical Care

  • Sulfur Studios 2301 Bull Street Savannah, GA, 31401 United States (map)

Sulfur Studios is pleased to present our national call for entry exhibition, Revival: A Call for Radical Care, curated by Antonia B. Larkin. Revival is a multi-faceted exhibition on display in the Main Gallery of Sulfur Studios from March 4th - 28th, 2021. In conjunction with the exhibition, we are also hosting two site-specific installations filling multiple areas of Sulfur Studios, featuring work by Tricia Hersey of Atlanta’s Nap Ministry as well as curator, Antonia B. Larkin. Larkin will also be leading an educational program for children in partnership with Live Oak Public Libraries.

About the exhibition

As a culture, we have been indoctrinated into social norms that have driven us to lose touch with who we are, instinctively. For this Call, artists were asked: What role do the arts play in the healing process? How do radical self and collective care inform your artistic practice? What strategies have you been using to facilitate radical care for yourself and your community? These queries resulted in the inclusion of 14 artists from across the country who make work that is both conceptually and aesthetically potent, in a variety of media including sculpture, video, painting and site-specific installation. Revival: A Call for Radical Care challenges the social norms that have led many to seek self and collective care, radically.

Participating Artists:

John Alleyne, Diana Laurel Caramat, Jeanne Ciravolo, Jessica Fuquay, Jezabeth Roca Gonzalez, Maria Joranko, Casper Kittle, Riley Kleve, Shahnaz Lighari, Jerrold Mobley, Radheya Visperas Ponce, Stephanie Concepcion Ramirez, Matilda Sabal, Christine Sajecki

The curator for this exhibition is Antonia B. Larkin, an African American artist and curator whose practice examines intimacy, healing, and representation. Larkin holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Georgia Southern University. She currently lives and works in Savannah, Georgia. Larkin will also be creating a site specific installation for our ON::View Pop-Up Gallery.

About The Nap Ministry’s Site-specific installation in our ON:View Pop Up Gallery:

The Nap Ministry was founded in 2016 by Tricia Hersey and is an organization that examines the liberating power of naps. They engage with the power of performance art, site-specific installations, and community organizing to install sacred and safe spaces for the community to rest together and facilitate immersive workshops and curate performance art that examines rest as a radical tool for community healing.

“Our social media memes are a part of our justice and art practice. They have been shared millions of times all over the world via our social media platforms. Our Instagram page is a tool to deprogram the masses from the toxic brainwashing of grind culture (a collaboration between white supremacy and capitalism). We center our memes as propaganda messages and uplift repetition of these messages as one of the many ways we can go deep into our “Rest is Resistance” movement.”

The pieces for this site-specific installation are inspired by the historical documents of fugitive slave posters and ads from the American history of chattel slavery and abolitionist print propaganda. These works are designed and produced in collaboration with Emily Earl of Prismatic Prints. This installation will be displayed in our ON::View Pop Up Gallery, and may be seen anytime of day or night through our Bull Street windows.

About the Radical Care Youth Art Project:

In recent years, conversations surrounding self and collective care have become more prominent. While having these discussions, it is essential to give youths space to consider what care looks like and how to express it. The Radical Care Youth Art Project, led by exhibition curator Antonia B. Larkin, allows young folx to create a mixed media collage using prompts to reflect on how they care for themselves and others. Participants will have the opportunity to create and have their work showcased at Bull Street Library. Art kits can be picked up at Bull Street Library from March 1st - 20th, 2021.

Revival: A Call for Radical Care will be on display from March 4th to March 28th 2021, with an Opening Reception on Friday, March 5th from 6 - 9PM.
