Main Gallery: "History in Herstory" by Ida Irby

  • Sulfur Studios 2301 Bull Street Savannah, GA, 31401 United States (map)

Sulfur Studios is pleased to present "History in Herstory," an MFA Thesis Exhibition by Ida Irby, on display from February 25th - 28th, 2021. After serving eight years as a US Army photojournalist, Ida Irby now works as a civilian photographer and fine artist. As a veteran, she uses her studio practice to highlight the hidden treasure of the armed forces: women.

Through a layered blend of realism and expressionistic mark-making, Irby elevates her photographic references into painterly historical documents. She strives to connect her story to the larger cultural truths of 21st-century military women, one piece at a time.

“Modern wars reflect a major change in traditional gender roles in both narrative historical art and portraiture. Paintings from the first two world wars often depicted women as caretakers, domestic workers and sexualized pin-up models. My narrative art and portraiture are an examination of the values, perceptions, and beliefs of women who have served within the current decade in the United States military. A military that excludes women in arms is not a true reflection of our armed forces; therefore, historic narrative art which excludes women cannot be true to historic fact...my art remains an authentic legacy of a female American veteran. ” -- Ida Irby

"History in Herstory" will be on display in the Main Gallery at Sulfur Studios from February 25th - 28th, 2021. There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, February 27th from noon - 3pm, viewable by appointment only with masks required.
