Artist Statement

Single-Use Sketch Studies: the U.S. Two-Party System is a commentary on the failure of politicians to serve their constituents and communities. Drawn over photographs of discarded coffee cups, the artist highlights the inherent (financial) waste in political campaigns. Dedicated to Thomas Nast, this series looks at the origins of party mascots in editorial cartooning at the turn of the century. The artist compares this to the disposable political ‘trashings’ candidates offer up on social media. The display contains dimensional coffee cups etched with tweets from candidates running in Georgia this season.
