“Reclaim. Revive. Restore.” is a M.F.A. thesis exhibition by Sarah Murphy that features a collection of contemporary jewelry inspired by the ancient Japanese technique of Kintsugi. The Kintsugi process of mending a broken ceramic vessel with gold adhesive is reinterpreted into the context of jewelry making with imperfect elements. Through the act of repetition and working with materials deemed invaluable, the collection is a representation of finding beauty in life’s imperfections.
Sarah Murphy is from Marion, Ohio and will be completing her M.F.A. in Jewelry in Fall 2019. Her jewelry making technique involves a process of creating her own “imperfect” gems from discarded plastic tubes from her family’s factory. Her work is about challenging the standard of perfection in jewelry making and the value of the materials being used.
“Reclaim. Revive. Restore.” is on display from November 14th - 16th 2019 and can be seen during the gallery’s open hours, Thursday - Saturday, noon - 5PM. The Reception is on Thursday, November 14th from 5-8PM.
