A Time to Heal Project Statement

Grief is a concept that everyone can relate to, especially after this time of a pandemic. Many lost friends and loved ones, and many more lost experiences such as graduations, weddings, jobs, or time with family. This experienced grief can be explored in the tactile medium of clay and become a way for people to connect through a physical process. Kim Riner’s ON::View Residency project, A Time to Heal, will give the community an opportunity to collaborate with the artist in the making of a Community Grief Quilt. Riner will create tiles out of black stoneware clay that the community will be invited to add textures to through pressing in items from lost loved ones or special tokens from lost experiences, textured fabric, or participants can visualize their emotions using tools and their hands. Riner will fire the tiles and begin assembling them during the residency period, allowing the public to see this part of the process. This community endeavor will be displayed during Riner’s upcoming exhibition, Impermanence, at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center Gallery in October, 2021.
