The gallery at Sulfur Studios presents Imaginary Lives, new work from Jon Witzky, with the reception on August 16th from 6 - 9PM. Witzky’s work is inspired by the emotional and psychological resonance of place and time. He is interested in exploring the hidden moments between the mysterious and the familiar, the magic of twilight and the moment before sleep.
The paintings in Imaginary Lives are populated by the ghosts of an unrealized past, they are besotted by a strange mystery, one deeply rooted in the imagined light of the deep south. These large works are both cinematic and abstract. A watery landscape fades into a void, patterns and drips coalesce into something recognizable. The familiar arises out of the unknown, narratives come together only to fall apart again.
Jon Witzky is an artist living in Savannah, Georgia with a studio in Sulfur Studios. He received his MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and is currently teaching art at Georgia Southern University. He recently curated a pop-up video exhibition, Longing/Desire, at the Expose Art House in Montgomery, Alabama, featuring video artists from Savannah and around the world. This is Jon’s first solo show in Savannah.
Imaginary Lives is on display from August 15th – 24th and may be seen during Sulfur Studios’ regular business hours Thursday through Saturday from noon – 5PM or by appointment.
