About the Artist:

Rebecca Braziel was born in Savannah, Georgia and went on to receive a BFA in Fibers from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. She spent many years in Houston where she completed a six-month artist residency program at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, was awarded the Houston Individual Artist Grant, and held the position of teaching artist at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her work was exhibited at venues including Lawndale Art Center, Galveston Arts Center, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

In 2020 Braziel returned to Savannah and has since completed the Arts Southeast ON:VIEW Residency, acts as Alumni Mentor for the SCAD FIbers Department, works as Community Artist Educator for the SCAD MOA, established Studio 10 Project Space, and was included in the SCAD deFINE Art 2023 exhibition, Protégé. Braziel maintains a studio at Sulfur Studios from which she designs and carries out interactive art experiences engaging the community, an effort recently awarded the Starlandia Foundation Community Grant in 2024.

Artist Statement:

Rebecca Braziel focuses on process and material as wayfinding tools to discover the conceptual underpinnings within her practice. In Braziel’s current body of work she honors the importance of the river to the life and spirit of the local community while looking deeply into the status of that relationship. Referencing the changing of the tides and the treasures they reveal, Braziel will slowly alter the piece over a two month span. By bringing this evolving project to the Art Box, Braziel invites conversation around the meaning inherent in the acquisition and display of art objects.
