Sulfur Studios is pleased to host Gabrielle Torres in the ON::View Residency from August 11th - September 3rd, 2022. Gabrielle Torres will be weaving together a loom painting made from donated materials on a giant handmade loom - while creating portraits of Savannah locals. Gabe invites her fellow Savannahians to bring in “meaningful scraps'' of fabric to donate and to share memories related to the material. These fabric scraps might symbolize a particular moment in time - for example, a leopard print dress once worn to the Rail Pub or baggy dark blue jeans sported at the Savannah Bananas game. Or simply discarded bits of fabric from great-grandmother's sewing machine.
Please join Gabe, following her down a rabbit hole of conversation and creation. The connections and donations made to this project will influence the paintings and installation, but will also allow the community an opportunity to connect in a unique way.
About the Artist: Gabrielle Torres was born in Philadelphia, PA, and currently resides in Savannah, GA. She recently received her MFA in Painting from SCAD. Although she was born in Philadelphia, she grew up in Sumter, SC and attended Lander University for Visual Arts.
Torres has recently been featured in Shoutout Atlanta magazine and The Item newspaper in Sumter, SC; Solo exhibitions include: The Mommy Chronicles Pt. 1 and Pt. 2.
