ON::View Artist Residency: Jon Field - "The Desiring Machine"

  • Sulfur Studios 2301 Bull Street Savannah, GA, 31401 United States (map)

The Desiring Machine takes a Dada masterpiece as its primary point of reference. Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau was a continually changing, immersive environment meant to be experienced by the viewer as they walked through it. Made mostly of found materials, its only principle was that of continuous fluid production, a dynamic process of adding and subtracting.

Adopting this model, Jon Field will oversee the construction of a Merzbau (or ‘Desiring Machine’, as it has been called) for Starland. Combining materials collected on site (both natural and manmade), images (found and otherwise), and ideas generated through discussion with members of the community, the artist will oversee an ever-evolving architectural/visual installation in the Residency Studio.

There will be a strong performative element to the project, in the sense that the space will be in constant flux throughout the residency. This will generate an ever-changing window display for onlookers to enjoy, to bring friends to see, to feel they are part of something that is for them, not just for the Savannah elite. Where Schwitters’ Merzbau was a private affair, this project will be very public, playing out live throughout the residency period and allowing different groups (who may not otherwise meet) to engage and create with each other.

Participants are asked a simple question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This is a question we are unaccustomed to asking ourselves when we are adults. Surely, we have arrived at some sort of mature, immutable state? Field’s project invites people of all ages to reject the idea that they have stopped growing, and to consider what their future might hold. This question is particularly pertinent today, as the covid pandemic has prompted many of us to reconsider our values and life-path.

Participants are invited to bring to the site something that represents their hopes for the future. This might be an image or object; These elements will be added to the installation according to the wishes of the individual or group involved.

Jon Field will be working in the Residency Studio TH - SUN, 12 - 5PM, and the public is invited to drop by and collaborate with the artist!
