A Return To… features artists who are creating in the spirit of Sankofa, by making work that takes intentional steps into the future while looking back to the past in honor of those who came before. The Adinkra symbol implores those of Afrikan descent to reach back into ancient history for traditions and customs that have been left behind - "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."
The notion of moving forward is always persuasive, as it allows one to work towards a desired future. However, “moving forward” does not always address the root of our problems. By knowing what our ancestors laid down before us, we can take their successes and failures into our own existence, not losing sight of the forces that prevailed, and what has enabled us to be as free as we possibly can.
A Return To... presents sixteen artists exploring the heritage, culture, and folkways of their ancestral and indigenous roots through a variety of creative practices, sharing perspectives on the importance of self-awareness and self-worth.
“You cannot enslave a mind that knows itself. That values itself. That understands itself.”
– Nobel Laureate, Indigenous Leader, Wangari Maathai
