“Tree important species of the coastal forest (from left to right): Live Oak, Red Cedar and Cabbage Palm. In this photo they are growing on a midden, a pile of oyster shells left here long ago by native Americans. All three species tolerate periodic saltwater inundation, but too much permanent salt water in the ground will kill them. The strong roots of the Red Cedar in this photo have prevented it, until now, from falling into the marsh.”
