“This ephemeral pond on Ossabaw Island fills with fresh water after heavy rainfall. Much wildlife on the barrier island is dependent on ponds like this. A problem: so much water has been pumped out of the Floridan aquifer, the aquifer under coastal Georgia, that surface water on the islands drains much faster into the ground leaving the surface of the Islands drier.”
